Geography Of Wayanad


Wayanad stands on the southern top part of the Deccan Plateau and its major attraction is the grand western Ghats with the lofty  ridges interspersed with dense forests and green valleys. Most of the area in this district is covered by the dense forests and blessed with immense beauty of the nature.
Mountains
Brahmagiri(1608 meters),Banasura peak(2073 meters),Chembara peak(2100 meters) are the main mountains in wayanad. These mountains are surrounded by rain forests,where rare species of animals and plants are found. These mountains are famous tourist locations,people from all around the world comes to visit these areas.
Rivers
Kabini river and its three tributaries, the Panamaram, Mananthavady, and Kalindy flows through the wayanad.  Kabini is an important tributary of Kaveri river.  Kabini is one among the only three rivers in Kerala that flows to the east.  Banasura sagar  which  is the largest earthen dam in India and the second largest in Asia  dam is built in the tributaries of the Kabini.
Climate

Wayanad has a salubrious climate. Generally the year has classified into four seasons cold weather, hot weather, south west monsoon and north east monsoon. Cold weather is from December to February and hot weather is from March to May. South west monsoon is from June to September.  North east monsoon is from September to November. This place experiences a high relative humidity which goes even up to 95 per cent during the south west monsoon period.  High velocity winds are common during the south west monsoon and dry winds blow in March-April. High altitude regions experience severe cold.
